The Bridgwater Way

The Bridgwater Way programme gains its first business sign up thanks to Mercure Hotels. The project is focussed on helping to keep Bridgwater moving as the town goes through a period of significant growth and investment. By providing information, advice and tools people can choose the best time to travel and routes to use, and help reduce the need to travel in the first place. In particular, the project will help people avoid times when the roads are busiest. It includes investment in new roads and improvements to existing roads and junctions, as well as miles of new and improved routes for pedestrians and cyclists. It also offers active travel initiatives to make getting to work or school easier and safer. Mercure Bridgwater Hotel is due to open in October 2018, the 118 room hotel will require a large workforce and therefore will act as a large trip generator for both staff and visitors. Staff at the hotel will benefit from a range of offers while the business itself will receive a tailored and evidence based Travel Action Plan. Sustainable travel options will also be promoted to visitors. Along with Mercure, Nagel Langdons Ltd and S Roberts and Son have also signed up to The Bridgwater Way programme. Nagel Langdons have 11 depots and over 500 lorries carrying chilled and frozen food all over the country, while S Roberts and Son hold over 80 years’ experience in skip hire, asbestos, demolition and contract earth moving in Bridgwater. We are also delighted to announce that the Bridgwater Chamber of Commerce has also signed up to the programme. Having the Chamber on board will help promote the programme to member businesses and also raise awareness of the programme within Bridgwater itself. Over the coming months, the business engagement team will be actively working with organisations in the Bridgwater area. Businesses can benefit from a communications package, quarterly newsletters and social media updates. Businesses can also access the SmartGo online platform with over 25 sustainable transport suppliers offering discounts along with local offers such as a discount on your morning coffee! On top of this, businesses can take advantage of several incentives such as one-to-one consultations with employees to offer advice on walking (provided by Living Streets), active steps eight week health programmes aimed to encourage employees to walk or cycle to work (provided by Sustrans) and bespoke advice on car sharing and car park management issues. Alongside the programme, our partners BetterPoints are also offering a reward platform for employees to download and earn points for their sustainable travel journeys. Points can then be exchanged for a wide range of high street vouchers or charity donations.
